Alice BaconĀ (1909- 1993) was a politician.
Alice was born into a mining family in Normanton and attended school there.
She trained as a teacher at Stockwell College, Branley and taught in her home town.
Alice was active in the Labour Party’s youth wing from the age of 16.
She was a member of the National Union of Teachers and was elected President of the West Yorkshire Association in 1944.
Alice served as a Labour MP in Leeds for 25 years and was a member of the party’s National Executive for 29 years.
As Minister of Education, she campaigned tirelessly for comprehensive education.
